This is how you reach your New Year's resolutions
Having New Year's resolutions is something that belongs to every new year, and most people are familiar with the saying "new year, new opportunities." The new year can certainly offer new chances to create new habits, quit a bad habit, or learn something new. At the same time, almost everyone knows the feeling of setting a range of goals for the new year without being able to follow through. New Year's resolutions themselves can be both motivating and work well for creating new habits, but it requires that they are followed. There can be several reasons why one does not reach their goals, and here you can read about different pitfalls to avoid and tips on how you can achieve your New Year's resolutions!

Three things to avoid when making New Year's resolutions
1. Setting too many goals
This is a classic pitfall, as people view the new year as an opportunity to accomplish everything they didn't do in the past year. However, by having too many goals, they often become unclear and hard to implement in practice. Therefore, one should choose one to two goals to focus on.
2. Setting goals based on things you don’t actually want
Another common pitfall is setting goals that do not align with what you like, who you are, and what you enjoy. Even though the new year presents opportunities, you are not going to wake up as a new person the moment the year changes. Therefore, it is very important to set goals based on what you truly believe in and wish to achieve. An example is if one wants to eat less meat but actually loves eating meat – it will be challenging to achieve if you set a New Year's resolution to become a vegetarian. A simpler and clearer goal could instead be to eat meat-free meals one to two days a week.
3. Not implementing the goals into your daily life
This may be the most important pitfall to avoid. It is incredibly important to break down the New Year's resolutions into small goals that you can achieve daily. This way, you can track your progress and adjust your goals if you've set them too high or they are too difficult to achieve.
Tips for achieving your New Year's resolutions
- Make a plan
- Break the New Year's resolutions down into smaller sub-goals so they can become part of your daily life and a new habit.
- Bring a friend or partner along so you can motivate each other!
- Don’t let a setback set you back completely. Learn from the mistake and move on.
When planning, it can be helpful to have some guides to refer to, especially concerning training. It might be a good idea to check out a beginner guide to yoga, or a general guide to training programs for beginners. If you have something to refer to that has been prepared in advance, it may be easier to create your training plan.

The most important thing to remember is that it takes time to change or establish a new habit. How long it takes, however, is often debated. But it can take anywhere from one to three months. Therefore, the most important tip is to continue even if your motivation wanes, and to work with the sub-goals while keeping the larger goal or New Year's resolution as a motivating factor.

Achieve your goals for next year
Achieving your New Year's resolutions can be very difficult and demanding, especially when all the goals involve strict training requirements you plan to start. One can easily feel guilty if they do not accomplish everything they say they will do in their New Year's resolutions. If you notice that you're struggling a bit with motivation when it comes to reaching the larger New Year's resolutions, it can be wise to set smaller goals for yourself that are easier to achieve.
